Explanation
The congiuntivo imperfetto is used in three important situations:
1. Type 2 conditionals (periodo ipotetico possibile):
Se + congiuntivo imperfetto → condizionale presente
"Se avessi più tempo, studierei il pianoforte." (If I had more time, I'd study piano.)
2. After a main clause verb in the past that triggers the congiuntivo — when the timeline shifts backwards:
"Speravo che venisse." (I was hoping she would come.)
"Voleva che lo chiamassimo ogni sera." (She wanted us to call her every evening.)
3. With 'magari', 'come se', and 'benché' to express present wishes or contrasts:
"Magari facesse bel tempo!" (I wish the weather were nice!)
"Si comporta come se fosse il capo." (He acts as if he were the boss.)
The good news: the endings are very regular, and only a small number of verbs are irregular. Once you know essere (fossi) and avere (avessi), you're already halfway there.

Learner Tips
For Type 2 conditionals, the formula is fixed: Se + [congiuntivo imperfetto] → [condizionale presente]. Memorise it as a single unit.
The io and tu forms are always identical: 'se io andassi / se tu andassi'. Context makes it clear.
'Magari' + congiuntivo imperfetto = a heartfelt, often wistful wish: 'Magari fossi ricco!' (I wish I were rich!)
Start with just essere (fossi) and avere (avessi) — these two appear in the vast majority of hypothetical sentences you'll need.
Common Mistakes
Using the condizionale after 'se' instead of the congiuntivo imperfetto. 'Se vorrei' → ❌ ALWAYS WRONG. 'Se volessi' → ✅
Confusing essere (fossi = if I were) with avere (avessi = if I had). 'Se fossi i soldi' → ❌ | 'Se avessi i soldi' → ✅
Forgetting that 'magari', 'come se', and 'benché' also trigger the congiuntivo imperfetto — not just 'se'.
